Twin Engines of Innovation

We live in a time of awesome scientific advances-each creating exciting design challenges. But how can we bridge this radical newness and our everyday lives?

Our designers at DesignworksUSA ask this question every day, as do researchers at MIT's Media Lab. While we each begin at opposite ends of the corporate-academic spectrum, we enthusiastically share the conviction that we can, and should, learn from each other.

DesignworksUSA invents physical products, which leverage new technologies, while the Media Lab invents new technologies to be expressed in physical products. This intersection of design practice and scientific innovation serves as a rich forum for collaboration. Visiting MIT researchers have deepened our knowledge of such things as "Spatial Typography" and "Tangible Bits," fueling our design thinking with new perspectives. In turn, our designers have consulted on Media Lab projects concerning design integrity, theoretical styling and automotive intelligence, lending form to their remarkable ideas.

Our mutual quest is to continually challenge our assumptions about everyday objects, and to imagine and invent new physical expressions for new technologies.
